What is a Payment Gateway?
A payment gateway is a secure Internet bridge between merchant businesses and the credit card and electronic check payment processing networks. Payment gateways provide merchants with fast, reliable, and secure passage for transaction data via a 128-bit encrypted Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Internet Protocol (IP) connection, and manage the complex routing of payment information to the appropriate credit card processors.

How a Payment Gateway Works
A merchant submits a credit card transaction to the payment gateway via a secure connection from a Web site, a retail store or from a wireless device. The transaction information then travels on a secure connection to the merchant bank processor, which submits it to the Credit Card Interchange, which then routes it to the customer’s credit card issuer for approval or rejection. If approved, the necessary funds for the transaction are passed back through the Credit Card Interchange, which relays the results of the transaction back to the merchant bank’s processor, which in turn relays the information to the Payment Gateway. The transaction results are then returned to the customer and/or merchant. The entire process is usually completed in a matter of seconds.
The Credit Card Interchange passes the appropriate funds for the transaction to the merchant’s bank, which then deposits funds into the merchant’s account, typically within two to four business days.
