Facebook as a tool for online marketing

I must admit, I was part of the group of people that were initially skeptical about using Facebook for online marketing. After quite a bit of research I have found Facebook to be quite the marketing tool. Before my research I have asked myself questions such as, why are so many companies flocking to Facebook? How is it being used by businesses? Do I have to create a personal profile even though I am not interested in using Facebook for personal use?

Why are so many companies flocking to Facebook?

Simply put Facebook is where you will find your next prospect and referral source. However, social media should not be confused with a sales tool. Instead, it is used to produce content and create relationships in the online environment. Your credibility increases as you involve your fans in conversations and provide them with advice on specific problems and topics.

How is it being used by businesses?

  1. Branding – Facebook can be used to generate brand awareness.
  2. Customer Engagement – through the use of Facebook applications you can communicate promotions, contests and events.
  3. Drive Web Traffic – Facebook can be used as a vehicle to drive traffic to your website.
  4. New Customer Acquisition – Facebook provides a wonderful opportunity to find new customers. As a lead generation tool, it can also be used to qualify leads.
  5. Viral Effect – Facebook places “word of mouth” on a whole new level.

Do I have to create a personal profile even though I am not interested in using Facebook for personal use?

According to Facebook’s terms of services, you do. “Profiles represent individuals and must be held under an individual name, while Pages allow an organization, business, celebrity, or band to maintain a professional presence on Facebook.” If your business’ profile gets shut down by Facebook for violating this rule, your friends list will vanish with it. If you are concerned with having to maintain a personal profile and a business page, a solution would be to secure your personal profile from your business page with the following security settings:

  • Hide your profile from Facebook’s search engine
  • Select a unique username not tied to your company name
  • Limit the amount of profile information that is visible to the public
  • Limit the contact ability to your profile
  • To avoid intrusion or hacking, remove applications you are not using and be skeptical of games and quizzes
  • Avoid tagging and exposing your places
